The Woman in Black

The reasons for the success of The Woman in Black were different to that of Skyfall. There are many reasons as to why the reasons are different such as the production company behind the film. Due to the production company behind The Woman in Black being a smaller company it meant the budget was considerably less then that of Skyfall. The unique selling point of The Woman in Black was different to Skyfall.

One reason for the success of The Woman in Black was the casting of Daniel Radcliffe, with him having an established fan base from the Harry Potter films it guaranteed a large audience for the film. The distribution company behind the Woman in Black isn't as established as the one behind Skyfall, however the distribution company did have a large role to play in the success of the film. Skyfall Answer

How did the PRODUCTION and MARKETING/DISTRIBUTION of 'Skyfall' influence its success at the box office?

When a piece of media is created the success of the piece of media is dependant upon many factors within the media industry. A few factors which may affect the success of the media is the marketing campaign which would raise awareness of the media and attract a wide audience. The cast involved in the film may affect the success of the film, if the cast members already have a huge following then the following is likely to watch the film as well. The producers and distributors behind the film will also have a huge influence over the success of the film, if the media company has a large control over the media industry then it will almost guarantee the success of the film. If the production company is owned by a media conglomerate then the likelihood of success is high. The benefits of a media conglomerate are that they're likely to have ownership which will benefit the marketing of the film. For example the ownership that Sony have over the media industry would have been very beneficial to the success of 'Skyfall'.

With Sony Pictures having a large influence over the production of 'Skyfall' it meant that the media conglomerate Sony were behind the film. The effect this has is that it allows the Production and Marketing of the film to be enhanced so much more. The reason for this being  it would have ownership over tv channels, which airs chat shows. On these chat shows it will feature leading cast members within the film an example being Javier Bardem and Judi Dench appearing on the Graham Norton show. Also they had the funding to spend £200 million on marketing. This allowed them to use brands such as Coke Zero. This synergy allowed them to attract fans of James Bond and people who enjoy coke together which increases the attraction of the film and increases the audience. With Sony also being behind it, it meant that it secured its position in many cinemas around the country during the opening weekend. Also, other facts have a contribution such as the film being James Bond. With James Bond already having an established fanbase the success of the film was already guaranteed. The release was also coherent with the 50th anniversary of James Bond which further raised awareness for the film. A sketch during the Olympics opening ceremony which featured Daniel Craig and further publicised the James Bond franchise.

The budget of the production company also allowed the film to become successful. The budget they had available to them allowed them to create a piece which could have more shots available and a range of different effects. It would also allow them to secure a high profile writer and a high profile director. This would enhance the quality of the film. They also were able to secure distributors which would allow the film to reach a wider audience. Also during the film, it featured high profile brands such as Heineken which allowes them to create adverts which featured James Bond and enhanced the publication of the film. This synergy again created an even wider audience and more then likely enhance the success of the film.
